I keep seeing this nickname on local signs and want to understand the historical background of the town.
Why is New Britain, CT known as the Hardware City?
1 Answer
New Britain, Connecticut, earned the nickname 'Hardware City' during the 19th and 20th centuries due to its role as a major center for American manufacturing and tool production. World-famous manufacturing companies like Stanley Black & Decker were founded or built large industrial bases here, producing hardware, locks, and hand tools sold worldwide. While the local economy has expanded into healthcare, education, and services, the city maintains pride in its industrial legacy. You can explore this history firsthand at the New Britain Industrial Museum.
